Jewelry Care
Making sure your jewelry keeps its sparkle is all about understanding the care it requires. It’s important to remember that not all jewelry will benefit from the exact same care, so take some time to understand the gemstones and metals your jewelry is made from before you decide on the best jewelry care routine.
Damage Prevention
The first step in taking care of your jewelry is always to take preventative measures to ensure that it doesn't get seriously damaged in the first place. While there will always be some degree of wear and tear on jewelry, especially if it is worn every day, there are still a few things to keep in mind to ensure that your jewelry stays intact over time.
- Keep it out of the direct sun: Just as sunlight damages skin, heat and light can damage certain gemstones. Excessive sunlight can discolor or damage amethysts and topazes. Pearls can bleach and flake if exposed to too much sunlight. Some other gemstones, such as opals, will darken if exposed to too much light.
- Avoid harsh chemicals: Exposure to common everyday household chemicals, such as ammonia or bleach, can damage metals and gemstones. Even chemicals worn on the body, such as hairspray, perfumes and lotions, can affect metals and dull gemstones.
To keep your jewelry looking new, it's a good idea to spray perfume, lotion or hairspray before wearing your jewelry. It is best to remove fine jewelry before swimming or using any type of household cleaner.
Cleaning
Many gemstones can be easily cleaned with warm water, neutral detergent and a soft brush. Wash jewelry in a tub of warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Dry the jewelry with a lint-free cloth.
Storing Your Jewelry
Most jewelry comes in lined boxes or bags that are perfectly fine for storage. However, most people still use a jewelry box or valet to store their jewelry.
Jewelry boxes have individual felt-lined and padded slots for rings, necklaces, and earrings to keep them organized, clean, and secure. Some jewelry boxes are lined with anti-tarnish cloths, which are perfect for storing sterling silver jewelry.
With relatively little effort, your fine jewelry can be cleaned, properly cared for and safely stored, and provide years of happy wear.
